While wet weather hit Paris around lunchtime on Wednesday that didn’t stop the drama and entertainment around the Roland-Garros grounds.
The tennis continued to enthral ticket holders during the third day of Opening Week, whether it was qualifying action on the smaller outside courts, some gripping contests under the Court Suzanne-Lenglen roof or next door undercover on Chatrier as the biggest stars in the sport kept crowds happy during open practice sessions.
Twenty-six second round qualifying matches were completed - and those with tickets on Thursday are in for a treat with a whopping 48 matches across a blockbuster Day 4 schedule.
The biggest upset on Wednesday came early when Japanese world No.200 Nao Hibino saved a match point before going on to stun one of the favourites in qualifying - Canadian former major champion Bianca Andreescu - 6-4 in the decider.
Hibino saved match point down a set and 5-3 and fought back from 2-5 in the second set tiebreak before grinding out a famous victory in heavy conditions on Court 14.
Men’s second seed Alexander Shevchenko almost found himself heading for the exit door amid a crazy atmosphere on Court Suzanne-Lenglen, but somehow survived in one of the matches of the day to beat French hope Mathys Erhard in a deciding tiebreak 10-5.
Young American Ethan Quinn has enjoyed a rewarding trip to Europe this spring and continued on the right track as he beat Aussie Bernard Tomic 6-3 6-4 to ease into the third round.
Another young player having a strong year, Denmark’s Elmer Moller, found a route into the third round by beating Belgian Kimmer Coppejans 4-6 6-1 6-2 on Court 12.
The 21-year-old shared his story with Dan Imhoff and admitted that as a youngster he never thought he would make it in professional tennis.
The number of stars on the practice courts grow with each passing day and on Wednesday we saw for the first time this week Jack Draper, Grigor Dimitrov, Daniil Medvedev and Alex De Minaur.
Chris Oddo camped out courtside to keep a close eye on who’s looking sharp with three days to go until main draw action.
One face we’re yet to see this week is that of 2025 Australian Open champion Madison Keys. Reem Abulleil spoke to the American recently about adjusting to life as a major champion and how clay suits her powerful game.
And so to Thursday when we’ll feast on almost 50 qualifying singles matches - some of those to finish due to today’s damp weather - as well as the singles draw ceremony to look forward to at 2pm.
Alix Ramsay guides us through the most intriguing contests of the day while Chris Oddo tees up the draw by suggesting the names to look out for when the ceremony begins tomorrow afternoon.
The Roland-Garros 2025 Opening Week is shaping up nicely! Tickets are still available to come and support the future stars and watch training sessions with the biggest names on the WTA and ATP tours.
