Richard Gasquet en route to round two
Monday's play has finished for the day. Thanks for joining us throughout Day 2 of main draw tennis. We look forward to your company again on Tuesday for an 11am start. Tuesday Order of Play.
The world No.1 Sinner produces a remarkable escape in the third set to eventually go through in straights. Rinderknech led 4-0 and 5-2 only for the top seed to reel off five successive games for a 6-4, 6-3, 7-5 victory. Sinner sets up a tasty second round meeting with the soon-to-retire Richard Gasquet. And that result brings the curtain down on Monday's tennis.
Just as it was starting to look like a comfortable night for world No.1 Jannik Sinner, back comes the Frenchman Arthur Rinderknech. The world No.75 trails by two sets to love but has stormed into a 3-0 lead in the third. AR is starting to play like a man possessed and the Chatrier crowd is enjoying this turnaround...
Top seed Jannik Sinner is going along nicely on Chatrier, up a set and a break on Arthur Rinderknech after taking his opponent's serve late in the opening set to seize control. For the second successive night the noise is DEAFENING a few yards away as the French faithful this time get behind wild card Leolia Jeanjean, who's just levelled her match with Irina-Camelia Begu on Court 7. They'll be singing and chanting for a good while longer over there. It's the sort of noise you'd find down the road at PSG's Parc des Princes football stadium.
French No.1 Arthur Fils gives his fans what they came for as he blasts his way past Chilean Nicolas Jarry in four sets in the last match of the day on Lenglen. It's the youngster's first victory at his home major. The night match on Chatrier is now under way next door as top seed Jannik Sinner goes up against another French player, Arthur Rinderknech, under the lights.
It's just gone 8pm here and we're minutes away from our second night match of the week - Sinner against Rinderknech. Away from Chatrier, Fils and Jarry are into a fourth set on Court Suzanne-Lenglen, while 2025 Aussie Open champion Madi Keys is up a set on qualifier Daria Saville on Court Simonne-Mathieu. Fans are enjoying another seven matches on the outside courts as the evening light starts to fade...
In the final tournament of his long and glittering career, Richard Gasquet beats Terence Atmane on Court Philippe-Chatrier to set up a potential second round meeting with world No.1 Jannik Sinner. 'Richie' moved through in four sets 6-2, 2-6, 6-3, 6-0.
Novak Djokovic was in for his pre-tournament media on Monday (he plays his first round match on Tuesday against Mckenzie McDonald) and was asked what former coach Andy Murray said to him during the Rafa goodbye ceremony after the Serb won his 100th title in Geneva on Saturday - just days after the two brought their working relationship to an end. The 24-time major champion said the Scot was quick to crack a joke.
“He did congratulate me, and he said, ‘Now that you have a proper coach, you're winning tournaments,’" Djokovic laughed.
“Of course he was joking, but, you know, I think I have said enough, but I will say it again: Andy is just an amazing person.”
One of the most surprising results of the opening two days comes in from Court 13 where young Canadian Gabriel Diallo beats one of the in-form clay court players of the year, 18th seed Francisco Cerundolo, in straight sets. Diallo, who reached the quarter-finals at the Madrid Masters recently, blasted through 7-5, 6-3, 6-4 on an overcast afternoon in Paris. No dramas for seeds Karen Khachanov, Stefanos Tsitsipas, Sebi Korda, Alejandro Davidovich Fokina and Holger Rune in the men's draw though, who all won earlier.
Twenty-four hours after the Rafa tribute ceremony, Caroline Garcia plays the last singles match of her Roland-Garros career, a defeat to American Bernarda Pera. Meanwhile over on Chatrier, French legend Richard Gasquet starts the final tournament of his long career. He goes up against fellow-Frenchman Terence Atmane with the winner potentially playing Jannik Sinner in round two.
Big results coming in thick and fast. The biggest shock of the event so far is delivered on Court Simonne-Mathieu as unseeded German Daniel Altmaier beats No.4 seed Taylor Fritz 7-5, 3-6, 6-3, 6-1. Altmaier reached the last 16 in Paris five years ago while Fritz has been struggling to find full fitness this season with a problematic abdominal injury.
Spain's 10th seed Paula Badosa recovers from a set down to beat four-time Grand Slam champion Naomi Osaka on Chatrier. Over on Lenglen, former world No.4 Caroline Garcia's last Roland-Garros singles campaign has come to an end after she lost to American Bernarda Pera 6-4, 6-4. Garcia announced on the eve of the tournament this would be her 15th and final appearance at her home Grand Slam. Garcia will be back for doubles with Diane Parry after they were given a wild card.
Naomi Osaka - making quite a fashion statement in the process (see below) - has edged a tight opening set on Chatrier against former world No.2 Paula Badosa. The Japanese star dominated a first set tiebreak 7-1, although the Spaniard has built a 3-0 lead in set two.
Elsewhere, men's third seed Taylor Fritz is in a battle with Germany's Daniel Altmaier. They're locked at one set apiece on Court Simonne-Mathieu. Altmaier reached the fourth round here in 2020.

Four-time champion Iga Swiatek has cleared the first hurdle, although the Pole's famous 'bagel factory' wasn't open for business today. The women's defending champ did enough to make sure it was a straight-sets win - 6-3, 6-3 - to see off Rebecca Sramkova from Czechia.
We’ve had live tennis for over two hours now. Let’s bring you some significant results. Casper Ruud brought to an end Albert Ramos-Vinolas’ journey at Roland-Garros as the former quarterfinalist says goodbye to the tour this year. Two-time finalist Casper was too good, winning 6-3, 6-4, 6-2. No.12 seed and Saturday’s Strasbourg champ Elena Rybakina needed three sets to beat Argentine qualifier Julia Riera. And Aussie Alexei Popyrin is into round two after Japan’s Yoshi Nishioka retired in the fourth.
The Day 3 schedule has been released with 24-time Grand Slam champion Novak Djokovic and women's second seed Coco Gauff starring on Court Philippe-Chatrier. The night session features Gael Monfils against Bolivia's Hugo Dellien.
Mirra Andreeva, Jessica Pegula, Alexander Zverev and Jack Draper all play on Lenglen. Teenage star Joao Fonseca's meeting with Hubert Hurkacz is on Court 7. Get there early!
Spain's Jessica Bouzas Maneiro has knocked out No.9 seed Emma Navarro in just 57 minutes. Her 6-0, 6-1 scoreline makes Bouzas Maneiro the player with the fewest games dropped in a completed match against a top-10 opponent at Roland-Garros in the last 40 years.
You may have missed it, but you may also just want to take your time to savour it all again. Yesterday’s ceremony to honour King of Clay Rafael Nadal was special, very special.
Chris Oddo was among the 15,000 lucky fans on Court Philippe-Chatrier who watched as a teary-eyed Nadal took in a moving tribute video and spoke of his love for the sport and for Roland-Garros, accompanied by fellow ‘Big Four’ players Roger Federer, Novak Djokovic and Andy Murray.
Here are pictures of the ceremony, as well as of Rafa’s day at Roland-Garros as he greeted fans and visited the Tenniseum.
And here’s an interview with Rafa where he talks about his two decades of love for the Parisian clay.
Enjoy!
Defending champion Iga Swiatek starts her Roland-Garros 2025 campaign shortly on Court Philippe-Chatrier. This is Iga's seventh appearance in Paris and on four of those she has won the title. The Pole has a special relationship with this tournament; this is her happy place.
Here's her story in pictures for Roland-Garros Magazine.
What a day we had yesterday!
The highlight of the day was undoubtedly the ceremony for Rafa (more on that later), but there were also plenty of stories from the first round of singles.
Chris Oddo gave us his take on No.1 seed Aryna Sabalenka's imperious start here in Paris as she dispatched Kamilla Rakhimova in just 60 minutes. Lorenzo Musetti also headed through in straight sets, watched by Alex Sharp.
Qualifier Victoria Mboko continues her dream run here and is now into the second round thanks to a fearless encounter against New Zealand’s Lulu Sun.
No.27 seed Leylah Fernandez will be packing her bags after defeat by Olga Danilovic, who Dan Imhoff describes as one of the ‘most dangerous unseeded floaters’ in the women’s draw. Dan was also on court to watch as Tommy Paul came from a set down to stem the challenge of lucky loser Elmer Moller.
The first night session of Roland-Garros 2025 lived up to its thriller billing with No.13 seed Ben Shelton taking three and a half hours and five sets to stamp his mark on Lorenzo Sonego. Victoria Chiesa stayed for it all.
Welcome to Day 2 at Roland-Garros. After yesterday's emotional ceremony to honour the King of Clay, we’re back to a full day of tennis and there are some treats in store.
Play is about to get under way around the grounds, with Casper Ruud getting things started on Court Simonne-Mathieu against Spanish qualifier Albert Ramos-Vinolas.
Order of play for Monday 26 May
At 12pm defending champion Iga Swiatek opens her campaign against Rebecca Sramkova. They’ll be followed on Court Philippe-Chatrier by Naomi Osaka and Paula Badosa.
Keep checking back for news and updates.
