Time to say goodnight from the French capital after an action-packed, truly memorable first day of main draw tennis on the clay. We'll see you tomorrow for Day 2. Merci Rafa...
At just a stroke past midnight in Paris, 13th seed Ben Shelton gets over the line to record a very good win over Italian Lorenzo Sonego, fighting back to survive 6-4, 4-6, 3-6, 6-2, 6-3.
Even that isn't the last match on court, however, as Portuguese No.1 Nuno Borges recovers from two sets down to edge French qualifier Kyrian Jacquet 6-3 in the fifth on a rowdy Court 6.
What a first day this is turning into as two matches go into a fifth set as we approach midnight Paris time. Ben Shelton sneaked the fourth set to take his Chatrier showdown with Lorenzo Sonego the distance while Nuno Borges and French qualifier Kyrian Jacquet are into a fifth over on a packed Court 6. Follow on the live scores page below...
We still have three matches on court - Shelton and Sonego have split sets so that one could go long. It's BOUNCING on Court 6 where a wild crowd is getting behind French qualifier Kyrian Jacquet who's just gone up two sets to love on Portugal's Nuno Borges. And another Portuguese player, Jamie Faria, trails American Jenson Brooksby by two sets to one on Court 9.

Meanwhile over on Lenglen fourth seed and recent Rome champion Jasmine Paolini is in a real scrap. She's split sets with China's Yuan Yue, who before today had only ever won two Grand Slam singles matches.

While Rafa's been saying his goodbyes, a few more results have come in from around the grounds. No.32 seed Alex Michelsen fell at the first hurdle when he went down to Argentine qualifier Juan Manuel Cerundolo 6-3, 6-2, 6-4. There was no stress for 15th seed Frances Tiafoe who beat Roman Safiullin in straight sets. Eleventh seed Diana Shnaider eventually won 7-6(3), 6-2 after her earlier injury scare.
The four pose for photos with FFT president Gilles Moretton and tournament director Amelie Mauresmo before Federer, Djokovic and Murray wave goodbye. Rafa returns to the centre of the court one last time to soak up the applause before a lap of honour to say goodbye to his adoring fans. He's joined on court by his son as the 14-time champion leaves the arena. Merci Rafa...
After Rafa's emotional address, Roland-Garros MC Marc Maury takes over and introduces a video featuring his greatest rivals - Roger Federer, Novak Djokovic and Andy Murray. The big screens then cut to an image of the three men waiting backstage and the trio makes their entrance to join Nadal on court. The noise is deafening as the capacity crowd welcomes them into the arena...
This was the view that greeted the Spaniard as he returned to his favourite court. After waiting for the applause to die down (it took a while) an emotional Nadal addressed the crowd, his friends and family - in English, Spanish and French - from his position in the centre of the court.
Rafa walks out onto Court Philippe-Chatrier to a hero's reception - 15,000 fans chanting his name and all wearing the clay-red 'Merci Rafa' t-shirts that were given to the crowd.
