Kyrian Jacquet celebrates a spot in the main draw
The busiest day yet at Roland-Garros sparked into life at 10am when the first of a whopping 48 qualifying matches got under way.
Fans were spoilt for choice with a mix of second and third round contests to enjoy and by the end of play at gone 9pm local time five men and five women had secured main draw spots with final round wins on Thursday.
Spanish veteran Albert Ramos-Vinolas - playing his final Roland-Garros in his last year on tour - was the first to make it mission accomplished. He was quickly followed into the main draw by Frenchman Kyrian Jacquet, Italian Matteo Gigante, American Ethan Quinn and Spain’s Pablo Llamas Ruiz.
Japan’s Nao Hibino, Nina Stojanovic from Serbia, Germany’s Tamara Korpatsch and Oksana Selekhmeteva all powered through third round matches.
In the last meeting on Court Suzanne-Lenglen, Frenchwoman Carole Monnet became the 10th player to earn a golden ticket into the main draw in front of a noisy Paris crowd.
Two significant names that came through second round matches on Thursday, and who will be back on court 24 hours later, include South African Lloyd Harris and young Canadian Victoria Mboko.
Harris - a former US Open quarterfinalist - took Alex Sharp through his recent injury battles ahead of a date on Friday with Marin Cilic.
And Dan Imhoff met the engaging 18-year-old Mboko, who talked about her family background and introduction to the sport.
Away from qualifying, it was draw day on site in Paris and as ever there were plenty of talking points after a ceremony that was attended by guest of honour, French superstar footballer Ousmane Dembélé.
Afterwards, we put together an overview of the men’s draw, a summary of the women’s singles draw and chose the matches we’re looking forward to from the opening rounds.
The Carlos Alcaraz fans will no doubt have noticed he has drawn Japanese star Kei Nishikori in the first round. Have a read of our exclusive interview with the defending champion before the main draw gets under way on Sunday.
The fifth and final day of qualifying awaits on Friday when another 22 matches will be settled.
