Alcaraz through to face Shelton

Carlos Alcaraz scrambles through in four sets with a complicated - and towards the end edgy - 6-1, 6-3, 4-6, 6-4 victory over a very determined and stubborn Damir Dzumhur. The 33-year-old had last year's champ worried in that fourth set and at times Alcaraz looked extremely stressed.

In truth, the defending champion did well to turn the fourth set around from a break down without playing his best tennis.

The result means Alcaraz is into the last 16 where Ben Shelton awaits. The No.2 seed will need to improve his level against the American in 48 hours' time.

Dzumhur forces a fourth

We're into a fourth set on Chatrier and this is turning into a fascinating match. The first two sets went the way of Carlos Alcaraz without too much fuss 6-1, 6-3 before world No.69 Damir Dzumhur began to figure things out and get under the Spaniard's skin.

The 33-year-old worked his socks off to nick the third set 6-4 and broke in the first game of the fourth before a battling hold to go up 2-0.

He couldn't could he...

Get to know Ethan Quinn

As Carlos Alcaraz and Damir Dzumhur's Chatrier night match heads towards a fourth set, we'll quickly point you in the direction of a great interview with young American Ethan Quinn.

The 21-year-old qualified here and plays Dutchman Tallon Griekspoor on Saturday for a place in the last 16. Alex Sharp discovered he's more interested in finding a good restaurant and an antiques shop when he's touring Europe than the more regular past-times enjoyed by someone of his age group...

Svitolina sets up Paolini showdown

The last singles of the day over on Court Simonne-Mathieu comes to a conclusion under the lights and Elina Svitolina is into the fourth round once more, a 7-6(4), 7-6(5) winner over American Bernarda Pera. The four-time RG quarterfinalist from Ukraine finishes with the sweetest backhand up the line and she'll be back to play fourth-seeded Italian Jasmine Paolini on Sunday.

Rocha rocking Roland-Garros

Meanwhile, RG writer Dan Imhoff met the talk of Portuguese tennis this week - Henrique Rocha - before the 21-year-old plays his third round match against Alexander Bublik on Saturday. Rocha has been making headlines back home after fighting through qualifying - and then two five-set main draw matches - in his Grand Slam debut. Read Dan's feature through the link below.

Big Foe cracks last 16

American Frances Tiafoe's development as a clay court player continues as he reaches the fourth round in Paris for the first time in his career. 'Big Foe' plays a solid match to get past fellow-American Sebi Korda 7-6(6), 6-3, 6-4 on Lenglen. The 15th seed will be back Sunday to play unseeded German Daniel Altmaier for a spot in the Paris quarter-finals.

21:10

Fils withdraws from Roland-Garros

There's sad news for the French fans as news breaks here that Arthur Fils has been forced to withdraw from the tournament with an injury. The French No.1 had been struggling with physical problems during his miraculous five-set win against Spaniard Jaume Munar in the second round. His third round opponent Andrey Rublev moves into the last 16 where he'll play either Jannik Sinner or Jiri Lehecka on Monday.

19:55

Shelton-Alcaraz in the last 16?

And 13th seed Ben Shelton is the latest to add his name to the fourth round as he blows away Italian Matteo Gigante 6-3, 6-3, 6-4. That means we - potentially - have a Shelton-Carlos Alcaraz blockbuster on our hands on Sunday. Alcaraz plays Damir Dzumhur tonight.

Altmaier run gathers steam

Daniel Altmaier loves Roland-Garros. Five years ago, when the event was held during the autumn because of the pandemic's disruptions to the tennis calendar, he reached the fourth round. And today the 26-year-old German is back in the last 16 after beating young Serb Hamad Medjedovic on Court 14 4-6, 6-3, 6-3, 6-2.

Altmaier, who also beat fourth seed Taylor Fritz on his way to the second week, is projected to return to around the top 50 in the world regardless of his results for the remainder of the tournament. He plays either Frances Tiafoe or Sebastian Korda in the last 16 on Sunday.

Alcaraz-Dzumhur in an hour

We're around 60 minutes from more third round thrills in the night match on Court Philippe-Chatrier as Damir Dzumhur takes on defending champion Carlos Alcaraz.

18:56

Paolini, Rybakina into last 16

We have another two players into the fourth round - fourth seed Jasmine Paolini and 12th seed Elena Rybakina.

Paolini had too much for Yuliia Starodubtseva, pulling away from the lucky loser as the contest wore on to win 6-4, 6-1.

Rybakina crushed former RG champion Jelena Ostapenko 6-2, 6-2 to set up a great fourth round match to look forward to on Sunday against Iga Swiatek.

18:25

Friday evening round-up

As we approach 6.30pm in Paris heading into what will be a glorious evening in the French capital, it's a good time to bring you some scores.

Last year's runner-up Jasmine Paolini is a set up against lucky loser Yuliia Starodubtseva on Court Philippe-Chatrier and Elena Rybakina is cruising against Jelena Ostapenko 6-2, 4-2.

On the third biggest court - Simonne-Mathieu - Ben Shelton is looking good for a first journey to the fourth round here as he's taken the first set off Italy's Matteo Gigante 6-3.

And what an opportunity for Daniel Altmaier and Hamad Medjedovic who are fighting for a spot in the last 16 on Court 14. It's a set all over there in the evening sun.

Rune back from the brink

Holger Rune breaks the hearts of the French fans inside Chatrier by fighting back to beat Quentin Halys 6-2 in the fifth. Halys was two points from victory when Rune served at 4-5 in the fourth set. The win means it's Rune-Lorenzo Musetti in the fourth round.

A few minutes earlier on Simonne-Mathieu, former boys' champion Tommy Paul survived a second successive five-setter, this time against Karen Khachanov 6-3 in the fifth. He'll play Alexei Popyrin on Sunday for a quarter-final spot.

Not long to go...

Here's a look ahead to Friday's night match when Damir Dzumhur will look to unseat the defending champion Carlos Alcaraz under the lights of Court Philippe-Chatrier.

Alix Ramsay gives us her take on the forthcoming clash in her preview.

17:00

Swiatek into second week

The four-time champion Iga Swiatek continues her dominance at Roland-Garros by scoring another straight-sets victory to make it 24 consecutive wins at the Paris major - her overall record here now stands at 38-2.

Today it's Romanian Jaqueline Cristian who is the Pole's victim 6-2, 7-5.

There's a massive test around the corner for Swiatek however - either nemesis Jelena Ostapenko (a former RG champion) or former Wimbledon winner Elena Rybakina in the fourth round.

16:50

Saturday schedule

The schedule for Day 7 is out. Novak Djokovic takes the evening slot on Chatrier against young Austrian qualifier Filip Misolic.

'Popy' makes history

16:28

Aussie, Aussie, Aussie

Alexei Popyrin is into the fourth round in Paris for the first time as he beats Portuguese No.1 Nuno Borges. The Aussie - who won a Masters title in Canada last summer and who beat Novak Djokovic at the US Open, edged a marathon second set tiebreak 13-11 before running out a 6-4, 7-6(11), 7-6(5) winner on Court 14.

He’ll play either Karen Khachanov or Tommy Paul in the fourth round on Sunday - they’re starting a deciding set on Court Simonne-Mathieu.

Defending champion Iga Swiatek is up a set on Jaqueline Cristian on Lenglen, and Quentin Halys is leading Holger Rune by two sets to one on Chatrier.

Musetti back in the last 16

Italy’s 8th seed Lorenzo Musetti is the first man into the last 16 as he beats Argentina’s Mariano Navone 4-6, 6-4, 6-3, 6-2. We were all expecting a Musetti-Holger Rune showdown in the fourth round but Quentin Halys has other ideas right now - the Frenchman has taken the first set off Rune 6-4 on Chatrier.

Samsonova-Zheng set

The next player to book a fourth round spot is 19th seed and last week's Strasbourg runner-up Liudmila Samsonova, who has little trouble beating Dayana Yastremska 6-2, 6-3 over on Court 7. Next up it’s Olympic gold medallist Zheng Qinwen who awaits.

Holger Rune faces one of only two Frenchmen that reached the third round next on the main showcourt, Quentin Halys. The Dane was checking out Rafa Nadal's plaque earlier during his training session.

13:25

Sabalenka, Anisimova into R4

It’s a scorcher in Paris today - it'll reach 30c we're told - so if you’re playing a match you probably want to get on and off court (with a win, preferably) as quickly as you can. Any matches that go long and are physical are going to hurt today.

After Zheng Qinwen becomes the first in either draw into the last 16, she’s quickly joined by Amanda Anisimova, who beats Clara Tauson 7-6(4), 6-4 on Court 14.

Next it's world No.1 Aryna Sabalenka who moves through a straight-sets test against young Serb Olga Danilovic 6-2, 6-3 to set up a fourth round match against Anisimova.

Zheng stops Mboko charge

Canadian teenage qualifier Victoria Mboko’s dream run at Roland-Garros has been brought to a halt by No.8 seed Zheng Qinwen 6-3, 6-4.

The 18-year-old world No.120 stormed through qualifying without dropping a set and then continued her clean sheet through the first two rounds of the main draw, including an emphatic win over world No.45 Lulu Sun.

Mboko has already caught the eye of more experienced players including Coco Gauff and we'll definitely be hearing more of her in the future.

Rapid Recap of Day 5

As well as a packed day of tennis that saw the draw for the third round of men's and women's singles completed, we also said au revoir to Richard Gasquet. The French legend bowed out after his second round defeat to No.1 seed Jannik Sinner in what was Gasquet's 22nd appearance here in Paris. Fellow players including Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic were lining up to sing his praises.

Lee Goodall summed up all the day's action (and what a lot of action there was) in his daily Roland-Garros Wrap and you can watch a selection of the day's play in the Daily Highlights.

All the results from Day 5 at Roland-Garros

Take a moment to watch Day 5's Shot of the Day from showman Alexander Bublik, who came from two sets down to defeat Australia's Alex de Minaur - he deservedly lapped up the applause from the crowd for this one.

Bonjour and Happy Friday!

Welcome to Roland-Garros Day 6.

If you're in the grounds today, crack out the sunscreen as it's going to be a hot one ☀️

As always, play gets under way at 11:00 on all courts except Chatrier, with Lorenzo Musetti starting things off on Court Suzanne-Lenglen, while over on Court Simonne-Mathieu Canadian teenage qualifier Victoria Mboko faces No.8 seed Zheng Qinwen.

Order of play for Day 6 at Roland-Garros

No.1 seed Aryna Sabalenka is up first on Court Philippe-Chatrier and will face a tough test against Olga Danilovic, who has already seen off Leylah Fernandez and Danielle Collins.
